Hi, I have had some December flowers. Bulbophyllum crassipes - this one came to me as B. lilacinum. Bulbophyllum maquilingense - a rather recent purchase that seem to have acclimatized well. The flower only stays open few hours, and closes around noon. The first flower was short lived, lasting two days. B. scaberulum - This one came to me as Bulbophyllum sp. "Tanzania". At that time I tentatively identified it as B. scaberulum, going by the dried inflorescence that it came with. I have now been able to confirm the identity. Compared to other varieties that I have seen, the inflorescence is rather unimpressive on this one. However, the flowers are quite pretty. I also have spikes on my Bulbophyllum arfakianum "Alba" (probably is a variety of B. grandiflorum). I have been waiting for this one to flower, so hopefully my experimenting with a new led light will not have any adverse effects on this flowering. Regards, Christer

Nice species! I hate it when you buy one thing and when it flowers it's something else. I have a different coloration on my Bulb.maquilingense

Thanks, both of you.
Very nice, Lika. There seem to be some variation in this species. I noticed that a plant called Bulbophyllum rysyanum was described in 2007, and the few flower photos I have seen looks similar to the one in your pic. I can't say I know what the characteristics are that separates it from B. maquilingense, since I haven't read the description. My feeling is that it very well could be a variation in the species. I guess that depends on if you are a "lumper" or "splitter". However, B. rysyanum is accepted in the Kew Monocot list.

Christer

Awesome pictures and plants Christer.
I have found that all of the plants in the careyana section get mixed up and labelled wrong, I have only had two plants labelled correctly out of the couple dozen I've bought. The nice part is each time it's one I don't have haha
I love Bulbophyllum maquilingense, it is such a free bloomer and seems to always be flowering. I'll look to see if I have pictures.
Your Bulbophyllum sp. "Tanzania" looks so cool! I had a plant labelled B. scaberulum but looked nothing like yours, I have a feeling that mine was mislabeled and it wasn't very attractive. If you ever get seed from that plant I would love to trade or buy some!

Thanks Justin,
I'll keep you in mind regarding seed. The flowers withered just the other day, but I will see if can self it next time. Who know how long there are forests remaining on the African continent, well at least in some of the countries. It might be a good idea to try to propagate some of the rarely seen species - which might not be much in demand - for conservation purpose. I may have to check out some flasking facilities for the future.
Although the leaf/pseudobulb size are quite manageable, it does have quite long distance between the pseudobulbs, making it a rambling plant.
Regards,
Christer
