I am looking to set up my next Viv with a thumb species of frog so I can put some more delicate plants in. Looking at setting up 2-3 clay tubes packed with something (thinking maybe filter balls for fish tanks as I believe they do not float) and using the top as a shallow water feature. How quickly do you find your tubes empty and where do you find your tubes so I can experiment?
H2O mentioned that the Pleurothallid alliance species would do well in a wet/humid setting, Any idea where would be a good spot to get some of this species in Ontario? I have been looking through and they have some great blooms.

Hey scarloc, I find that the clay tubes will all leak at different rates based on their porosity, the ones I use leak perfect for me and seem to go down by about 1/4 everyday, maybe 1/5. I have mine in an open setup so it might dry out faster and leak faster then if you have them in an enclosed area. The filter balls should work perfect, it'll also stop stuff from growing in the centre. As for finding them, that's the hard part. They don't use them anymore for septic beds so you have to search, try all the hardware stores in your area and ask around to see if they have any ideas of where they might be in your area, dont be thrown off by what they say though, most of the time they have no idea what your talking about. I ended up finding a good handful at a building supply store and they gave them to me for a couple bucks each. If all else fails I've used clay pots before, it just gives you a different look and some of them don't leak very well or leak way too much. The Pluerothallid alliance isn't a very commonly grown group by larger operartions so it's hard to get them in Canada sometimes. The best thing you can do is visit the next orchid show thats around you and there will almost always be a few Pluero's at different vendors, unfortunately no single place offers a large selection of them so if you go to a show they'll all be there. The next best option is to wait until Ecuagenera comes back to Canada and they'll bring and ship ore-orders, here's the link. www.ecuagenera.com/epages/whitelabel4.sf/?ObjectPath=/Shops/ecuagenera

Unfortunately I can't help with finding the clay tubes, but I will say Ecuagenera has always been great to me with very healthy and large plants. Their selection is great and have lots of stuff you wont find in Canada. I believe the next time they are in Canada is the middle of February.
